IISc Bengaluru Slated to Get Medical School on its Campus
The Tata Group has partnered with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to establish the Tata IISc Medical School on the IISc Bengaluru campus, with the Tata Group committing Rs.500 crore to support the initiative. This collaboration aims to create a center of excellence that will bring together basic science, engineering, and clinical science to drive advancements in medical education and research in India. The medical school will focus on a variety of specialties, including oncology, cardiology, neurology, nephrology, diabetes, metabolic disorders, infectious diseases, integrative medicine, and public health.
The Tata IISc Medical School will offer integrated MD-PhD and other dual-degree programs designed to produce a new generation of physician-scientists and medical technologists. Students will be trained in both the medical school and in the science and engineering labs at IISc, combining modern clinical practices with groundbreaking scientific research. This approach seeks to develop a unique model for clinical research and training that can be replicated across India, enhancing the quality of healthcare and research in the country.
The medical school will also collaborate with leading global medical institutions to ensure that students gain expertise in international best practices, thus positioning India at the forefront of global healthcare. Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran highlighted that healthcare is one of India’s greatest challenges, and technology will play a critical role in transforming diagnosis, care, and community health. He expressed confidence that the Tata IISc Medical School will create a highly qualified cadre of physician-scientists and contribute to enhancing healthcare across India.
