New NMC Rules Mandate Age Limit for Faculty Appointments

The draft Teachers Eligibility Qualifications Regulations (TEQ) 2024 from the National Medical Commission (NMC) proposes specific academic qualifications for faculty, a minimum experience requirement, and an age limit for appointing faculties.

Experts view the draft regulations as a positive and necessary step for improving medical education and enhancing the quality of medical teaching, especially in private medical colleges, where there has historically been significant variation in standards.

Appointments and promotion of faculty in various teaching specialties imparting graduate and postgraduate medical education at institutions falling within the purview of the NMC have to be by the minimum qualifications and experience prescribed to maintain a standard of teaching, said the draft, issued by B Srinivas, secretary, NMC.

The draft regulations decided 70 years as the maximum age limit for appointing or granting extensions or re-employing individuals as teachers or medical superintendents, deans, principals, or directors at graduate and post-graduate medical education institutions.

The role of dean/director/principal must be filled by an individual with a recognized postgraduate medical degree from a recognized institution and a minimum of 10 years of teaching experience as a professor or associate professor at a medical college, including at least five years serving as a professor in the specific department.
