Established in 1883 as a constituent college of the University of New Zealand, the university is made up of eight faculties over six campuses and has more than 40, 000 students. As research-led university, the University of Auckland provides research opportunities in numerous subjects and offers 20 UG and 47 PG courses. The University collaborates with the major universities of the Pacific Rim economies through its network membership of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), a consortium of 42 leading research universities in the Pacific Rim. The University undertakes collaborative research with these international counterparts, both as an institution and through individual staff members who are expert in their field. Other network activities allow the University, its staff and students to affect global change through multidisciplinary forums and combined research efforts. The University also maintains a network of bilateral relationships with institutions and other bodies worldwide. In 2010, the University of Auckland accepted a formal invitation to join the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN), an international university network focused primarily on research collaboration, postgraduate education and research funding. WUN comprises leading research universities committed to bringing their collective capability to bear some of the major issues facing humankind.

To get admission in the University of Auckland, applicants must have a university entrance qualification. Domestic students undergo the NZQA University Entrance Standard while international students must have an equivalent approved qualification. Admission to the University also requires applicants to meet the preset academic and English language entry requirements specific to the degree for which they are applying. A valid IELTS score is required for students who do not complete high school education. The institute also offers various government and private funded scholarships for international students. Apart from a well structured teaching methodology, the institute puts emphasis on employability, innovation and inclusiveness in the education and its quality of delivery.
