Asia’s Emerging Higher Education Hubs

Diversity is perhaps the best word to describe Southeast Asia. From its varied geography and breathtaking natural phenomena to its friendly inhabitants and their extraordinary cultures, the countries in this region offer something for everyone. When it comes to the opportunities available for international students, institutions in Southeast Asian counties have been doing an excellent job in the recent past. There has been a noticeable increase in the number of international students’ enrolment among higher education institutions in countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia and Cambodia. For Indian students, who make up the majority enrolment numbers, medicine, engineering, business administration, law and the environmental sciences are the favourite subjects of study in Southeast Asia.

Now, in a market that has been dominated by countries like the US, UK and Australia, how did our own Asian countries make their mark? This shift in student mobility pattern can be attributed to many factors. Low tuition and living costs, close to home, increasing number of programmes in English language, improvement in global rankings and global perceptive are definitely the major ones. It is well-known fact that Asian universities, especially those in the Southeastern part, charge lower tuition fees in comparison to the universities in the western world. This allows students from the neighbouring countries like India to have an experience of pursuing an international higher education without being far away from home. The continuous advancement in global university rankings made by the institutions also attracts many Indian students to explore the education offered here. While, Asian universities expand the number of foreign faculty, transform their courses in response to the current demands and collaborate with the industry, their appeal will only going to escalate in the future.
