Western Sydney University to Open a Campus in India

Following the footsteps of Deakin University and the University of Wollongong, Australia’s Western Sydney University (WSU) is making strides toward establishing a campus in India, specifically in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The announcement was shared by Australian High Commissioner Philip Green via the microblogging platform X.

WSU Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Deborah Sweeney, formalized the initiative by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh from the Uttar Pradesh Government (GoUP). The proposed campus aims to deliver teaching, research, and technological innovations tailored to India’s agritech, technology, and allied industries, with a strong focus on sustainable agriculture and food security.
Proposed Programmes and Focus Areas

The university plans to offer programmes in fields such as computer science, business and engineering

The institution’s goal is to drive impactful solutions for critical areas, including agriculture, water management, and food processing.
Broader Australian Educational Involvement in India

While the WSU campus is proposed for Uttar Pradesh, it reflects a growing trend of Australian universities expanding their presence in India. Notably, Deakin University and the University of Wollongong have established campuses in Gujarat.

In a parallel development, Western Sydney University Vice-Chancellor George Williams highlighted plans to set up an agricultural institution in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The focus areas include water management in agriculture and food processing

The university has expressed flexibility in operating independently or collaborating with Karnataka’s existing agricultural universities.

These initiatives underscore the strengthening academic ties between India and Australia. The establishment of these campuses not only contributes to India’s education ecosystem but also supports skill development in critical sectors like agritech, technology, and engineering, addressing both local and global challenges.

If approved, WSU’s campus in Greater Noida will join the growing network of international institutions fostering innovation and collaboration in India.
