West Bengal Unveils Centralised Admission Process For Colleges
All state-run colleges in West Bengal will have a centralized admissions process for undergraduate courses, according to Education Minister Bratya Basu. The processes related to admission, which would be done through a common website, would start on June 24, he said.
According to Basu, this would negate a student with good grades from applying to multiple colleges at once, keeping his seat in the desired program and vacating the others. As a result, many seats remain vacant each year.
He stated that in the centralized process, a candidate will only be offered one seat at a time based on his results, with the possibility of receiving a better opportunity in the event that there is a vacancy elsewhere. The minister stated that applicants for up to 25 undergraduate courses can be made through the website by any student from any part of the country who has successfully completed their 12th grade examination. He also added that the merit list will be produced by the system and some autonomous and minority colleges, as well as Presidency University and Jadavpur University, have been left out of the system.
"We are launching the portal to provide students with an opportunity to choose their desired courses in chosen colleges via a single window system," Basu said.
On the posts of teacher-in-charge lying vacant in numerous educational colleges, he said the process to fill them has begun. At the press conference, Basu was also asked about Assam CM Himanta Biswas Sarma writing to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, encouraging her to give up the examination concerning the demise of IIT-Kharagpur understudy Faizan Ahmed to CBI.
