US Top Choice for Indian Higher Education Abroad
According to a recent report from the US Embassy, the United States remains the preferred destination for Indian students looking to pursue higher education overseas. The academic year 2022-23 Open Doors Report (ODR) demonstrates an unprecedented enrolment of 268,923 Indian students in the United States, reflecting a remarkable 35% surge.
The Open Doors Report, supported by the US Department of State and carried out by the Institute of International Education (IIE), monitors the increase in international student numbers and offers in-depth analysis of their demographics, financial backing, areas of study, institutions they are attending, and education levels.
According to the data, India has become the top supplier of international graduate students in the US, overtaking China with a significant 63% rise, reaching a total of 165,936 students. In addition, there was a 16% increase in Indian undergraduate students. More than 25% of the 1 million international students studying in the US are Indian students.
The report showcases India's leading position with 69,062 individuals participating in optional practical training (OPT), which allows eligible students to gain hands-on experience in their chosen fields. The US Embassy announced that the number of student visas granted during the June-August 2023 season reached a record high of 95,269 in the F, M, and J categories, showing an 18% increase.
The US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, praised the accomplishments of Indian students and their families, recognizing their choice to pursue education overseas as a wise investment. He highlighted the important role of Indian education in global competitiveness and expected India to remain a leader in the field. Garcetti emphasized the significance of reaching gender parity in student enrolment and urged more American students to consider studying in India.
