UGC Grants Autonomy to Eight Central Universities
In a significant development, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted autonomy to eight central universities across India, including two in Hyderabad: the University of Hyderabad (UoH) and the Maulana Azad National Urdu University.
The development aims to give these institutions more flexibility in academic, administrative, and financial matters. The move is viewed as a step towards empowering universities to make independent decisions in order to improve higher education quality.
However, both universities have been granted category II autonomy, which means they can offer some degrees but are subject to certain UGC limitations. While category II autonomy gives universities the greatest degree of autonomy, allowing them to set their own curriculum, fee structure, and admissions process.
