Tsinghua University founded the Department of Statistics and Data Science on July 10th. Tsinghua's important initiative is to enhance its disciplinary layout and align with national strategies.

The upcoming division will focus on creating statistical concepts and techniques that have a meaningful influence on society. By utilizing Tsinghua University's expertise in engineering and business, the goal is to improve statistical techniques in fields like internet technology, big data analysis, and artificial intelligence. It will also emphasize the development of high-quality talent in statistics and data science.

Li Luming, President of Tsinghua University, expressed a desire for the department to constantly improve its skills in basic research and original innovation, bring together top resources to make advancements in key big data technologies, enhance the quality of training independent talent, and aim to be a leading discipline globally in statistics and data science.

A seminar discussing the advancement of statistics and data science was held at the same time as the inauguration ceremony.

More than one hundred professionals, academics, and delegates from various educational institutions and organizations such as the National Bureau of Statistics, the Chinese Mathematical Society, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, Peking University, and others were present at the gathering.

Tsinghua's statistics program is built on a solid base. Throughout time, it has been the place where many exceptional statisticians have been nurtured. In the future, the department aims to embrace a worldwide outlook, measure its performance against top-tier benchmarks, and work towards establishing itself as a prestigious academic center that integrates industry, academia, and research at a domestic and international level.
