Telangana to Establish Education Commission to Address Educational Shortfalls

An order issued by Principal Secretary (Education) Burra Venkatesham outlines the objectives and role of the newly formed education commission in response to recent challenges in the State's education system. These challenges include poor student performance, as seen in the National Achievement Survey 2021, declining research output at universities, and a skills gap in meeting current market demands.

The commission consists of five members: a chairperson, three members from the education sector, and a member secretary with the rank of department head to oversee coordination. The tenure for non-official members is set at two years.

The commission's primary responsibility is to develop recommendations through broad consultations with stakeholders and the involvement of experts. The commission can also draw on the resources of the Education department’s employees on a deputation basis.

The recommendations will address various areas, such as universal early childhood education, foundational skills from primary through higher education, the holistic development of students, the integration of apprenticeships and employability skills into higher education, and fostering an egalitarian, values-based education to shape responsible global citizens.

The commission will be funded by a combination of State and private sector partnerships, with details regarding the terms of service for its members to be issued in a subsequent order.
