SDSU and Univ of San Diego Collaborate to Launch Dual JD/MPA Program
In order to enhance students' chances in their career and field of study, San Diego State University and the University of San Diego have collaborated to introduce a new program that enables students to earn both a Juris Doctor of Law and a Master of Public Administration. Students who meet the requirements will receive the advantages of attending both campuses and earn two advanced degrees in just 4 years, completing them sooner than if pursued individually.
“We are excited to work in partnership with USD to offer this program, which integrates coursework from both disciplines to foster a holistic understanding of the intersections between law and public administration,” said Roddrick Colvin, director and professor of public administration in the School of Public Affairs.
This upcoming dual degree program is scheduled to start in Fall 2025 and will undergo review by the California University system board for approval. It will provide eligible students with the opportunity to obtain both degrees quickly for careers blending law and policy components. Earning a dual degree can result in opportunities for jobs such as policy analyst, compliance officer, urban planner, government attorney, government affairs director, and various roles within nonprofits or government agencies at different levels - local, state, or federal.
“This exciting collaboration between USD and SDSU offers students both deep insights into the law and the legal system and substantial expertise in formulating and implementing public policy,” said Robert A. Schapiro, dean of the USD School of Law and C. Hugh Friedman Professor of Law. “The program prepares innovative leaders to confront society’s most pressing challenges, including through public service in the governmental or nonprofit sectors.”
The addition of the new dual degree program expands SDSU's graduate level offerings in various disciplines and collaborations with other educational institutions, alongside existing joint and independent degrees. It also shows the university's dedication to providing improved chances and assistance for graduate students and professionals through new independent doctorate programs, in response to the increasing demands of the workforce in the region and country.
