Nagaland to Implement NEP 2020 for upcoming Academic Year

The Nagaland State Level Education Committee (SLEC) has confirmed the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 for both government and private schools in Nagaland, set to commence from the next academic year. This decision, led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, includes restructuring measures and mandatory permissions for new private schools, aligning with NEP’s 5+3+3+4 structure for education, which will be adopted across the state from 2025.

Additional resolutions include the upgradation and amalgamation of schools. Six Government Middle Schools (GMS) in Kohima, Dimapur, and Mon will be upgraded to Government High Schools (GHS), and a Government Primary School (GPS) in Ikishe village will be elevated to a GMS. The committee also approved the amalgamation of middle classes in 16 GMS with GHS schools, renaming these consolidated institutions as GPS, and consolidating 20 GPS and GMS schools to GMS and GHS.

In line with efforts to optimize resources, the SLEC sanctioned the closure of 17 GPS with zero enrollment, spread across districts such as Peren, Wokha, Zunheboto, Chumoukedima, Phek, Mon, and Tuensang. For the private sector, new educational institutions will require prior approval from the Education Department and must operate under registered societies.
