JNU Proposes Centers for Religious Studies under Sanskrit and Indic Studies

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will establish a Centre for Hindu Studies, along with centers for Buddhist and Jain studies, under the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies. This decision was approved by the Executive Council of JNU in a meeting held on May 29, as per an official notification.

The establishment of these centers aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to incorporate the Indian Knowledge System into the university's academic framework. A committee was formed to explore and recommend the implementation of NEP 2020 and the Indian Knowledge System at JNU.

The notification dated July 9 mentioned that the Executive Council approved the committee's recommendations to set up the following centres within the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies:Centre for Hindu Studies, Centre for Buddhist Studies, Centre for Jain Studies.

The move follows similar initiatives by other universities. Delhi University (DU) established a Centre for Hindu Studies last year, which currently offers a master's degree and plans to introduce undergraduate courses. Additionally, DU already has a Department for Buddhist Studies and received approval in March to establish a Centre for Advanced Studies in Buddhism with an estimated cost of ₹35 crore.
