Indian Students’ Admission to USA Skyrockets by 23%
India has emerged as the leading source of international students in the United States for the first time since 2009, comprising 29% of the total international student population, according to the latest Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange. In the 2023-2024 academic year, over 330,000 Indian students enrolled in US higher education institutions, marking a 23% increase from the previous year. This growth was largely driven by a rise in graduate student enrollments, which surged by 19%, reaching a total of 196,567 students. Furthermore, the number of Indian students participating in Optional Practical Training (OPT) programs post-graduation increased by 41%, totaling 97,556 students.
US Ambassador Eric Garcetti expressed his enthusiasm over India's achievement, stating, "I am thrilled to share that, with over 330,000 students, India has sent more students to the US than any other country this year." He highlighted the significance of these educational exchanges in building future leaders and strengthening international relations, sharing his personal experience as a student in India.
Meanwhile, China, long the largest source of international students in the US, saw a 4% decline in enrollments, placing it in second place with 277,398 students. Despite this, China still leads in undergraduate and non-degree programs.
