India Leads as Top Source of International Students in US

India has once again become the top source of international students in the US for the 2023-24 academic year after a 15-year gap, overtaking China. The most recent Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange 2024 showed a significant 23% rise in Indian students going to the US for higher education, totaling over 3.3 lakh students.

The study points out a notable rise in the number of Indian students joining postgraduate programs, showing a 19% jump. Furthermore, there was a 41% increase in engagement in Optional Practical Training (OPT). The information also shows that 64.5% of students in India were registered in public schools, with the rest going to private colleges.

Regarding areas of study, mathematics and computer science were selected by 42.9% of Indian students, with engineering being chosen by 24.5% and business or management by 11.2%. Just 5.4% of students opted for physical and life sciences courses.

Many Indian students are pursuing opportunities overseas as higher education is seen as crucial for a successful career. During the 2023-24 school year, India saw a 23% rise in students studying in the US, similar to the UK where India became the leading provider of non-European Union students in 2022-23, showing a 39% growth.
