IIT Bombay and IIT-Delhi Secure Spots in Top 150 in Latest QS Rankings

Two Indian universities, IIT-Bombay and IIT-Delhi, have made significant strides in the QS World University Rankings 2024. IIT-Bombay has climbed 31 places to reach the 118th spot, while IIT-Delhi has moved up 47 places to rank 150th. This achievement underscores India’s growing prominence in global higher education.

India's performance over the last decade in the QS World University Rankings has shown remarkable improvement, with the number of Indian universities represented increasing more than fourfold, from 11 in the 2015 edition to 46 in the 2025 edition. This growth rate is the fastest among all G20 nations. In the latest rankings, India is the seventh most-represented country globally and the third in Asia, following China (Mainland) with 71 universities and Japan with 49.

Several other Indian universities also feature prominently in the top 250. These include the Indian Institute of Science-Bangalore (ranked 211), IIT-Kharagpur (ranked 222), and IIT-Madras (ranked 227). Notably, the University of Delhi has made significant national progress, climbing 79 places to reach the 328th position.

India's universities have also excelled in the Citations per Faculty indicator, which measures research impact. India achieved a score of 37.8, surpassing the global average of 23.5 and securing the second-highest position in Asia among higher education systems with more than 10 ranked universities, trailing only China (Mainland). Thirteen Indian universities feature among the world’s top 200 in this parameter, with Anna University and the Institute of Science ranking 2nd and 11th globally, respectively.

This improvement in research influence and global rankings highlights India's growing impact on the international academic stage and reflects the country's commitment to enhancing the quality and reach of its higher education institutions.
