Canada witnesses decline in post-secondary Indian students

Canada granted 55,500 study permits to post-secondary Indian students, making up 49% of all international post-secondary students entering the country. This ratio stayed the same as the numbers for 2023 as a whole and just slightly below the first six months of 2023 (51%). Prospective Indian students have not been facing significant rejection rates with an impressive study permit approval rate of 85% from January to June 2024.

ApplyBoard, an online platform that assists with international education, conducted this study. On the other hand, the decrease in the number of study permit applications submitted in the first half of 2024 suggests a continual waning interest in studying in Canada, though there was no data available on a country-by-country basis for submitted applications.

Other than Indian students, there are other demographics also considering alternative study abroad destinations. According to the study, searches worldwide for "study in Canada" have dropped by almost 20% from 2023, showing changes in the global education scene with other countries becoming more popular and Canada losing some of its attractiveness to potential students.

According to ApplyBoard, the approval figures for student populations with the most study permit approvals in 2023 have decreased significantly in the first half of 2024, except for countries like China, Ghana, and Guinea.
