By The Higher Education Review Team
Sheltering a whopping 30,000 students, 6,000 staff members and 3,000 Ph.D. scholars who study and work in different fields, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is the largest university present in the country. Having a long enriched history, the UvA encompasses research activities and is the most sought after university in Europe. The UvA was established in 1632 as Athenaeum Illustre by Gerardus Vossius (a Dutch classical scholar and theologian) who lectured on 'De Historiae Utilitate' (usefulness of history). On the following day, Caspar Barlaeus (a Dutch polymath and Renaissance
humanist, theologian, poet and historian) presented his famous lecture on the wise merchant  'Mercator Sapiens'. Walking through the path shown by the two renowned scholars, the University of Amsterdam has stood firmly for four centuries with a plethora of Bachelor's, Masters and other holistic programmes.
