MIT School of Management

By Dr. Sayalee Gankar, Director
Giving downright importance to value-based education, Dr. Vishwanath D. Karad initiated the MIT School of Management (MITSOM) in 1987, inculcating social, moral and integrity values among the students. The institution aegis under the MIT World Peace University, which is a first of its kind university in India inaugurated by Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on 12 August2017. This was dream come true for the founder who visualized acquiring an autonomous status for the MIT group of institutions and taking the institution to a higher position. MITSOM is accredited by National Board of Accreditation for MBA programme and listed in top 100 B-School in India by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), Government of India. Based in Pune, the institution annually houses 600 MBA and 90 MCA in Management students along with selected PhD scholars in its premise to impart knowledge, which is unique in multiple ways compared to other private B-schools. The MCA in management program offered by the institution comprises of nine trimesters instead of six semesters, which ensure the smooth transition of maximum knowledge including industrial training as a major part of the course. "œThe pedagogy we follow is not a regular one where one teacher teaches a large number of students. We rather gave birth to a new concept called "˜team teaching'," says Prof. Dr. Sayalee Gankar, Director, MITSOM. At MITSOM, the students learn from a team of two teachers, one with an industrial experience and the other with a vibrant academic and conceptual teaching experience. The ratio of the teacher-student is 1:9, which is an added attractive factor about the institution. There are 48 full-time faculty members and more than 100 Academics, Corporate professionals and Entrepreneurs from all around the world to provide insight to the students on management studies. It has also an unique WPU method of teaching, in which, World Peace Course is introduced to students.

A Fare Mix of Theoretical and Practical Learning

The trend of competency mapping is quite high in the job sector where the organizations perform competency mapping on their employees to find out their core competencies, which are required to perform their roles effectively. Accordingly, MITSOM has also initiated this activity on their students by developing inhouse assessment and development center for analyzing each student's SWOT and help them improve their career growth. This activity involves mentoring the first year students of all courses by internal faculty members followed by mentoring from experts who come from industry during the second year. Apart from this, the faculty members indulge the students in role plays, case studies, research and taking up live projects making the teaching-learning process completely student-centric. The institute believes in providing more hands-on learning rather than propagating a stagnant way of teaching. "œOften we invite eminent speakers from different areas to deliver their philosophies and experiences which impact the thought process of our students in a sound manner," shares Dr. Gankar. Personalities like Arnab Goswami, Anna Hazare, Shashi Tharoor, Kapil Sibal, Baba Ramdev and so on visited the institution till date, promoting all-round development of the students. The institution has signed MoUs with more than 60 industrial organizations like Oracle, IBM, Cameo, Business Standard, just to name a few and has a strong network with 600 companies around the world, making education more appealing and worthy for the students of MITSOM. The three months internship programs that the students undergo is organized and planned by the manager of the organization and the faculty members, facilitating a better learning experience for the students. "œFrom the very initial stage, each of our students is assigned under the mentorship of CEOs of top companies who guide and enable them to gain optimum practical experiences," opines Dr. Gankar.

Turning Learners into Employees and Entrepreneurs

Dr. Gankar grips precise care of the entrepreneurship activities undergoing in the institution. "œEvery individual hold a lot of capabilities in themselves that they are unaware of and with the right mentoring and encouragement, they will surely shine as successful business personalities, who have the strength and capability of making a mark for themselves in the business world," shares Dr. Gankar. The entrepreneurship development center of the institution from the very beginning of the course starts nurturing skills and potentialities, which are considered the requisite in the business arena. The research projects and the CSR activities taken up by the students further boosts the inquisitiveness among the students for more detailed understanding of concepts and ideas. The students are asked to visit rural areas and undertake projects which in turn are beneficial for both the community and the students. At present, the institution has 15 projects, which are divided among the batches where all the students would work closely for the people connected to the roots. Combining all these efforts by the institutions during the time of the placement, the students gets beatified with outstanding job opportunities in companies like Tech Mahindra, Deloitte, ITC, Zomato, Amazon, TCS, UPS Logistics, Asian Paints, HDFC Bank, United Bank of Switzerland (UBS), Kantar, Airtel and so on. "œWith more industry associations our faculty members are more aware regarding the necessary skills the companies search for. Hence, this leads our students in grabbing better jobs not only in India, but also abroad," claims Dr. Gankar. The rare combination of elements like research activities, value-based education, and well-built industry relations and out of the box pedagogy makes the institution an ultimate hub for management studies.

6000+ alumni are spread across the Globe, working in key positions in various industries. "œRe-connect"- The Alumni Meet is an annual event wherein a huge number of alumni love to visit the campus again. The institute organizes two Alumni Chapters namely Pune Chapter and Mumbai Chapter. ''We structure alumni meet focuses on sharing industry experience, managerial challenges faced in current era and entrepreneurial know-how between students, faculty and almamater,'' concludes Dr. Gankar.
