Siddaganga Institute of Tech.

By Dr. M.N. Channabasappa, DIRECTOR
Siddaganga Institute of Technology is one of the leading technical institutions in the state and the first
institution in the country to offer a condensed B.E. program, providing an opportunity for Diploma holders to
pursue higher education leading to an engineering degree.
S
omashekhar, who graduated from Siddaganga Institute
of Technology (SIT) in the year 1988, is not just
an alumnus of the institute. Indeed, the way he offers
his time and experience to serve his AlmaMater define
the role of Alumnus in a technical institution. With a
rich experience of over 25 years in product development and engineering
services in automotive, oil and gas verticals, Somashekhar
conducts seminars for SIT students, guides young entrepreneurs in
the campus and more importantly, recruits the best of them for his
16-year-old ven- ture UnitForce Technologies

neering colleges in India. The students I have
hired from SIT have always been loyal and they
know what the industry expects from them.
Recruiting from SIT is always a delight, not
only as an Alumnus member, but also for the
ethical values SIT has instilled in the students." Established in the year 1963 with only three
branches of engineering and an annual intake
of 120 students, SIT had a strong vision:
to develop young minds in the learning
environment of high academic ambience by
synergizing spiritual values and technological
competence. Though the institute has grown
into one of largest technical campuses in the
country with 12 UG programs and 16 PG
Programs with a total annual intake of over
1400 students, the vision has not changed
much. While, the spiritual guidance of its
founder, His Holiness Dr. Sree Sree Sivakumara
Swamiji imprints the ethical values among the
students, the rich academic experience of SIT
faculty members ensures that the students are
groomed to become globally competent.
Talking about the strength of faculty
members, Dr. M.N. Channabasappa, Director
of SIT, says, "œAt present, out of 301 faculty
members working here, 86 are Ph.D. holders.
Another 50 faculty members are pursuing
their PhDs in national level universities and
institutions." With a team of highly qualified
faculty members whose penchant towards

research is second to

research culture in the
campus. The institute has
16 departments that are
recognized as research
centers by Visvesvaraya
Technological University,
Belgaum, where students can
register for PhD program
and M.Sc by Research.
Along with that, the vision
of Dr. Channabasappa,
to transform SIT into a
top-ranking engineering
college anchored on sound
engineering research has
led the way to establish
Center of Applied Research
and Nano - Technology or
in short, Center of ART.
"œThe scope of this R &
D + academic mission
includes Nano-Technology
based applications in
RF/millimeter communications, urban sanitation, renewable
energy and rural infrastructure. All the science and
engineering departments of SIT are involved in this
inter-disciplinary effort," claims Dr. Channabasappa.
The institute's effort to become a center for
knowledge creation by actively engaging in the
cutting-edge researches has grabbed the attention of
many industries. Consequently, SIT has entered into
MoU with 50 industries where faculty members and
students have close interaction with those industries
in the areas of research and student projects.
"œIndustrial training in the relevant areas is
mandatory for all the students. Students
have to undergo practical training for
a minimum duration of six weeks in an
industry, relevant to their subjects of study
at the end of sixth semester," claims Prof.
H.N. Rangaraj, Head, Dept. of Training &
Placement, SIT. A close interaction with
the industries through research and other
academic related activities has also helped
the institute to maintain a consistent and
good placement record. Today, with more than 52
years of illustrious academic service, SIT is moving
towards becoming a deemed to be university, in order
to introduce the necessary dynamic changes in the
curriculum and to keep abreast with the latest trends
in the realm of technical education.
