M.S Engineering College
By -Sudarshan Raju M, SECRETARY
M.S. Engineering College aims to inculcate best engineering practices among students through quality
education, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial skills among its students.
M.S. Engineering College,
an institution permanently
affiliated to Visvesvaraya
Technological
University, Karnataka is
located on the outskirts of Bangalore. The
Secretary of M.S. Engineering College, Sudarshan
Raju M had this to say about the institute,
"œThe main pride of the college is that
the R and D achievements are better than
some of the premier institutes in Bangalore.
This alone is an indicator of quality faculty; it
is an indicator of the kind of exposure the students
are getting other than academics." With
state of the art facilities available to students
from hostels to high quality research labs this
college is striving to produce students with
technical knowledge.
With research becoming an important
parameter in the ranking process of colleges
MS Engineering College has been ahead of
most of the other engineering colleges in the
area. With foresight, it understood that Research
and Development can be an equally
important indicator for the quality of an institute.
The R&D department in this college
unlike other places provides exposure to the
industry through their Centres of Excellence,
the college aims to provide students
with experience in application of theoretical
knowledge. This can be seen in the fact
that for the past five years, all the students
submit in-house projects which they work
on and submit. Some of the major projects
that the college is working on are for the
AICTE, ISRO and VGST among many others.
With six patents from last year alone
this college understands that research and
development can be helpful in providing
placement opportunities.
Apart from research and development,
this is also a college where techno-preneurship
is being encouraged. The management
has provided facilities to enable entrepreneurship
on campus. The college has tied up
with National Entrepreneurship Network
and is even associated with a few departments
in the Karnataka state Government.
Currently, the college is incubating seven to
eight companies. The college handholds the
company till they incubate and provides incubator
facilities for free. Industry support and
counselling is also provided for the students.
An Industry Team comprising of patent lawyers,
patent applicators, angel investors and
so on often visit the campus to review all
the proposals done by the students The best
proposals are picked by this team and further
developed. However, even students with rejected
proposals can come back with a different
idea or a different implementation plan.
The fact that the college is encouraging
students into entrepreneurship and into
research and development has not stopped placements from happening.
Over the years, the quality of the
recruiting companies has rapidly
improved. This is because the students,
due to their constant exposure
to practical work through research have gained better technical
skills sought in the industry. The
companies in turn, have observed
this phenomenon and have come to
recruit from this college. The major
recruiters include HCL, Infosys
and Siemens. Through their placement
training programs, the students
are given training to prepare
them for the interviews. The college
even signed a MoU for Infosys
Campus Connect. As a result of
this the students receive all manner
of trainings in personality development,
soft skills and so on. They
also are able to participate in industry
visits giving them an insight into
how companies work.
In another Industry-Institute
Partnership, the college has signed
a MoU with Wipro's Mission 10X Program. This
program is aimed at providing training to the faculty
so that they remain up to date with whatever new developments
occur in the industry. MSEC is one of the
nodal centres of Wipro's Mission 10X programmes
in Bengaluru. However the faculty as opposed to only
receiving training, often visit other institutes in the
area giving lectures in embedded courses. Joanna
Augustine, an alumna, shares her experience as the
only girl in her class stating "œThe teachers were very
encouraging . They are very helpful and students are
encouraged to approach them. On the
first day of class the teachers never asked
"˜why is she in this class?' They treated
me equally like every other student"
When asked for her future plans,
Joanna stated that she could not decide
between doing a Masters in Engineering
or in Business Administration. This
is a common dilemma for many engineering
students who want to combine
their technical knowledge with management
capabilities. This is one of the
areas MSEC is planning to enter. Apart
from starting an MBA course, the college also aims
to get NAAC accreditation. Further down the line,
MSEC aims at gaining autonomy. The institution is striving
towards excellence
and imparting practical
knowledge through
Technical expertise
since its inception.
