By Dr. Bommanna Raja, PRINCIPAL
KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology (KPRIET) is making rapid strides in providing industry ready students and exposing them to social issues and causes. KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology is ensconced in a 66.9 acres campus 12 km away from Coimbatore airport. The vision of the college is to become a premier institute of academic excellence by imparting technical, intellectual and professional skills to students for meeting the diverse needs of the industry, society, the nation and the world at large. To achieve such a vision, the college does not compromise on the quality of facilities provided. This extends not just to the physical infrastructure provided, but to curriculum, faculty and the extent and quality of exposure provided to the students. "œWe want to be a globally competitive institution," says Dr. K. Bommanna Raja, Principal, KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology. The college though began in 2009, is making rapid strides to provide high-quality engineers and students had already brought in numerous awards to the institute. The college is actively involved in research and development. The college has signed 18 Department level MoUs and eight institute level MoUs. Many of these MoUs are tied with consultancy projects worth Rs 54.7 lakh last year alone. A lot of research usually happens through the four Centres of Excellence the college has begun. "œWe
have signed an MoU with a government agency and we are taking utmost care in developing that," reveals the Principal. Various MoUs have been signed with Greentech Solutions, Texas Instruments, and Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited among many others. Through these researches, students are able to take up projects that expose them to the industry experience. As they are involved in research, it is natural that their practical skills also make them more employable. The college has also taken up a project with Southern Region Railways in creating a database of the passengers and cataloging needs of the railway stations. All of these MoUs provide students exposure to the industry and experience. In the sphere of academics, there is a lot of focus given by the college. The learning environment provided is both student-centric and faculty-centric and academic audits are done through the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). This makes the learning process work two ways with both student and faculty filling in the gaps in their respective spaces. With a faculty of over 190 the college maintains a student-faculty ratio of 1:15. The college delivers the curriculum through systematic planning, execution and monitoring mechanisms with a focus of 60 percent on academics and 40 percent on exposure. The curriculum includes guest lecturers, industrial visits and in-plant training. There are also student internships provided as well as content beyond the curriculum. This comes in the form of student enrichment programs and value added courses for every department. ICT tools are often used as part of the curriculum such as Webinars, TED videos, MOOC, NPTEL, and Video Lectures. There is also a well-established feedback mechanism to make the education program more effective.
KPRIET understands the necessity of quality of faculty for providing quality technical knowledge to the students. The recruitment process is rigorous with four levels. Faculty are hired only once they are able to score 80 percent in all for levels of the recruitment process. Out of the 190 faculty, 24 are faculty from the industry providing an average industry experience of 13.7 years. Despite the fact that this college is affiliated, it has not stopped them from providing international exposure to foreign universities. Through video calls, Skype and conference calls, the students gain access to international faculty and courses. Visiting international faculty also provide courses and lectures to the students. These universities span from the USA to the U.K. Australia and South East Asian nations. The faculty is constantly put through numerous faculty development programs. These programs come through STTPs, seminars, conferences-international and national, faculty internships. With a Wi-Fi enabled campus with 50 Mbps internet connectivity and a computer lab with 797 computer students are able to work from anywhere within the campus. The college also has a well established Learning Resource Centre with 19,084 volumes, 7,879 titles of books and 130 journals. There is also a backlog of magazines and journals and the college is considered a local chapter of the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning. The college also provides good hostel facilities for both boys and girls. There is also focus on sports and the college has provided such facilities as indoor-gym, multiple basketball courts and football fields, a track field and many others. This college also has an on-campus medical facility to deal with emergencies and a counseling center for the students
