Bapatla Engineering College
By Dr. V.Damodara Naidu, Principal
Assuring the aspiring engineers to develop them into highly skilled and knowledgeable standout performers, Bapatla Engineering College (BEC) started in Bapatla town of Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh. With the collaborative efforts of the dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff, BEC is filled with topnotch customized learning programs in Diploma, Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. The major undergraduate (B.Tech) learning programs offered at BEC comprise of courses in Civil Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Information Technology and Mechanical Engineering, along with B.Tech in Data Science and B.Tech in Cyber Security. The Diploma courses at BEC include Civil Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, while Postgraduate (M.Tech) courses are also available in the same and also in Computer Science Engineering can be pursued by students. Apart from these engineering courses, BEC also provides Master of Computer Applications and Master of Science in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Electronics, Computer Science and Analytical Chemistry in its decorated curriculum.
An AICTE approved institute, every year a whopping 1580 students from all over India including local and rural areas get admission to BEC where they are exposed to a standard of learning only comparable to the International level. Every day, the students become technologically competent and ethically strong to take charge of improving life quality and economy of the country. Students are provided with experiential learning opportunities - for example learning through mini-projects involving selfdiscovered ideas and experiments. Teachers are committed for guiding the students to nurture these ideas into products at incubation centers. At instances, the students are supported with finances, mentorship for critical thinking and research. Some other factors helping the students in projects and research - such as the good alumni network providing regular updates on new developments in technology and industry sphere and BEC's MoUs with several industries fostering collaborative research projects where students have active participation. The outcome is overwhelming as the students get hands-on experience in working with the most recent technologies. Continuous quality assessment and quality improvement are parts of the teaching-learning process at Bapatla Engineering College, thus enabling the teachers to improve from their part as well. Understanding the dynamics of technological growth, the teachers unveil the state-of-the-art and market dimension of the courses to the students to add leadership quality in them. "œWe have a periodic assessment of the courses to maintain the quality. After every graduate cycle is complete, there is a team taking internal and external reviews. Based on the feedbacks from all the stakeholders, peers, national and International accrediting bodies and the benchmarking with internationally ranked Universities, revision for the next academic year is done and needful changes are implemented. The teachers understand the importance of uniformity in teaching-learning and hence simplify the learning effort by guiding the students through appropriate explanations of concepts", says Dr. V. Damodara Naidu, Principal, BEC.
All laboratories at BEC are modernized and its library is one of the biggest technical libraries in the state loaded with more than 80000 volumes and thousands of e-books in the digital library. There are nearly 2500 International Online Journals from IEEE, ASME, ASCE, Springer, Science Direct, McGraw Hill access Engineering Library, J Gate and ASTM Digital Library. Acknowledging the learning paradigms set by BEC, for consecutive years in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, the college has been awarded for the Best Laboratory Award and in 2014 for the best Library award from Acharya Nagarjuna University.
To its exciting learning environment, BEC has further established a center of competence worth INR 60 million in collaboration with Bosch Rexroth Center of Competence in Automation Technologies. It is a center of learning Pneumatics, Hydraulics, and PLC, Sensorics, modular Mechatronics System (mMS), CNC controller, Motion Logic Drives and Automation Studio Modules. "œStudents of all branches master the automation technologies which are otherwise not available in any undergraduate curriculum. This center is located in the research park alongside Siemens Center of Excellence and Robotic Technology Centre - an epitome of International standard software for design, modeling, analysis, manufacturing and project management. Students are trained on NX 8, Solid Edge and FEMAP with NASTRAN, CAM Express, Technomatics-Rob CAD, Team Centre and ProgeCAD. Moreover, qualified students are listed on Siemen's website for International placement. Another center - Robotic Technology Centre has imported a robot from one of the leading manufacturers of robots in the world - "˜KUKA, Germany' for approximate INR 3 million giving better learning facility to the students," explains Dr. Damodara.
A mandatory internship period inculcates the students with unmatched industry skills as part of the College's "œOne year student association with Industry Program", and BEC's own Industry Institute Interaction Cell and the Training and Placement Department helps in getting internship and research programs. Thereafter, the students are covered with employable skills and in the last five years, they have been recruited by reputed MNCs like IBM, Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Huawei and Value Labs. With its training programs in soft skills and technical skills to help students in the placement process, the college now has students that have gained highest packages upto INR 8.5 LPA. "œWe are committed to developing the students holistically by encouraging them in Cultural, sports, and social activities as we have unique timing from 7:30 am to 1:15 pm for classroom learning. It has created a 6 acre outdoor games field, facilities for indoor games and for fitness. The rest of the day is available for the students to concentrate on projects, special skills and sports and cultural activities," states Dr. Damodara. As he describes the information, Dr. Damodara elucidates on the plans to start courses like Data Science, Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics and collaboration with more foreign universities to facilitate students' exchange programs.
A B.Tech graduate in Mechanical Engineering who holds an M.Tech degree in Production Engineering from IIT Kharagpur and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from JNTUH, Dr. V. Damodara started his career with Bharat Electronics Ltd., Bengaluru. He played a major role there in the manufacturing of Radar Jammers. Later, Dr. Damodara worked for a startup in the telecom, defense and aerospace equipment manufacturing sector where he became the profit center head. He has implemented projects to ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) UK, NEC Japan and the World Bank. As the Vice President, he interacted with the VCs in the USA and was successful in claiming investment for startup manufacturing company in India. He worked as a consultant to Andrew Corporation, USA that wanted to establish business in India and as an advisor to GMR Group, Hyderabad for their international business. Dr. Damodara worked for nearly 30 years in MNCs and is regarded responsible for telecom infrastructure business in Asia and Africa.
