Uttarakhand Madrasa Education Board Plans Sanskrit as a Compulsory Subject

The Uttarakhand Madrasa Education Board (UMEB) is preparing to change its academic program by making Sanskrit a mandatory subject in 416 madrassas in the state. This program is a component of a wider attempt to improve the educational environment for madrassa pupils, showing the board's dedication to merging classical languages with contemporary learning.

The UMEB has prepared an official proposal to bring about this change, which involves establishing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state's Sanskrit department. In addition to introducing Sanskrit, the board is also contemplating incorporating computer studies to enhance the madrassa curriculum. This comprehensive strategy aims to provide students with a combination of conventional knowledge and contemporary skills.

The board decided to implement the NCERT syllabus in madrassas, leading to a high success rate of over 95 percent for students this academic year.

Mufti Shamoon Qasmi, chairperson of the UMEB, expressed confidence in the initiative, stating, “Our exceptional performance indicates that adding Sanskrit to the curriculum will significantly aid their educational growth.” He underscored the potential impact of this addition on students’ academic journeys.

The plan is currently being talked about with Sanskrit department officials, with several meetings being conducted to guarantee a successful launch of the project. Qasmi showed hope for a prompt positive reply, highlighting the teamwork between the UMEB and the Sanskrit department.
