US Ambassador Launches Women in STEMM Fellowship on Education Week

On International Education Week, US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti launched “Women in STEM Development and Medicine Fellowship”. Under this program, partnerships between the two countries will focus on enhancing the level of women education in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine.

In his speech at the launch, Ambassador Garcetti emphasized education, collaboration, and gender equity as keys to shaping the future of STEMM fields around the world.

Garcetti added, “Today we launch the Women in STEMM India Fellowship, an initiative of the U.S.-India Alliance for Women’s Economic Empowerment, led by the Gupta-Klinsky India Institute at Johns Hopkins University.”

He further added that it was a very apt time for the launch during International Education Week, with all the attention to gender equality and academic collaboration.

Johns Hopkins University President Ronald J Daniels also spoke, emphasizing the need to empower women in STEMM to drive global innovation. He explained that the fellowship, created in partnership with the U.S. State Department, aims to provide Indian women scientists with crucial research skills, mentorship, and access to global networks, addressing barriers they often face in their careers.

This fellowship is a part of the US Mission in India's larger initiative to enhance educational collaboration and increase the participation of women in the workforce and the formal economy. Ambassador Garcetti also noted a new record in the Open Doors Report. India stands out as the country that leads for the first time since 2009 in sending students to the US. Graduate students by Indians were reported at an increase of 19% percent, amounting to nearly 197,000.
