United States' New Education Policy introduces Specialised Courses for Indians
In accordance with India's new National Education Policy, the United States has launched an educational programme that will allow Indian students to pursue a one-year professional master's degree with industrial specialisation at American universities.
The courses will be limited to the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and will begin in the fall semester of 2024.
Following completion of the courses, students may remain in the United States for up to three years, subject to existing and applicable visa rules, to gain work experience in industry and repay student loans.
Twenty American and over 15 Indian universities are already discussing how to take advantage of the initiative, with the US State Department serving as a facilitator.
Akhilesh Lakhtakia, a Jefferson Science Fellow at the State Department's South and Central Asia (SCA) bureau, created the programme.
After nearly two decades, India's National Education Policy 2020 introduced a new education policy. It aims to make education: 1. available to all Indians, 2. global in scope while remaining focused on Indian culture and knowledge systems, and 3. a collaboration between students and educators.
The National Education Policy envisages an education system rooted in Indian ethos and driving the transformation of India (Bharat) into a sustainable and equitable knowledge society.
