With the launch of 'Channel' on the messaging app WhatsApp, several celebrities, companies, and government institutions, including the University Grant Commission (UGC), have begun experimenting with the Channel. The Indian regulatory organization that facilitates teaching, testing, and research in higher education has opened a WhatsApp channel to facilitate faster communication.

The WhatsApp Channel's goal is to build an informed community of tutors, students, and others by providing real-time information about current advancements in higher education. The Commission recognizes the persisting digital divide in society, thus this is an important step toward closing the knowledge gap. The UGC appeared on X, formerly known as Twitter, to announce the new information channel on WhatsApp and posted on Monday, October 16, "We are on WhatsApp! Join the UGC India WhatsApp Channel for the most recent important news on higher education in India."

"Recognizing that not everyone may have seamless access to UGC websites or other social media handles, the WhatsApp Channel becomes a powerful tool for reaching a broader audience," the commission said, referring to WhatsApp's accessibility to almost everyone in the country. This effort bridges the digital divide and guarantees that policy updates on higher education are readily available to all in a country as diverse as India, where connectivity varies."
