UGC Declares new draft guidelines for educational programs in India

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a draft for new regulations designed to redefine the minimum criteria for undergraduate and postgraduate education in India. The suggested modifications highlight adaptability, inclusiveness, and interdisciplinary education, in line with India's National Education Policy 2020.

The proposed regulations include admissions twice a year, various entry and exit options, acknowledgment of previous learning, and allow students to enroll in two undergraduate or postgraduate programs at the same time. Institutions of higher education that are ready for the transition can enroll students two times annually, once in July/August and again in January/February.

Students can now gain admission to undergraduate or postgraduate programs in any discipline, irrespective of their previous area of study, provided they meet the criteria through applicable national or university-level entrance exams.

The regulations suggest a credit system requiring students to acquire 50% of their overall credits in their primary field of study, while the rest can be taken in skill-oriented courses, internships, or interdisciplinary areas.

Undergraduate degrees will take three or four years to complete, whereas postgraduate degrees usually require one or two years. Moreover, students will be able to choose between an accelerated or extended degree program.

The accelerated degree program enables students to finish their undergraduate degrees more quickly by enrolling in extra courses each semester, whereas the extended degree program allows students to lighten their academic load and lengthen the program duration.
