Parliament to Introduce New Regulatory Body for Higher Education
The Parliament will introduce legislation to create a unified higher education regulator nationwide. In the new National Education Policy (NEP), the Higher Education Commission of India Bill (HECI) was suggested. The NEP argued for a single higher education regulator, claiming that the regulatory system has to be completely revamped to re-energize the higher education sector.
The bill is expected to replace the University Grants Commission (UGC), the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) once it is implemented. While the UGC is in charge of non-technical higher education, the AICTE is in charge of technical education, and the NCTE is in charge of teacher education.
Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Education, stated that the measure will play three important roles: regulation, accreditation, and creating professional standards. The HECI bill will not cover the fourth vertical funding, and the funding authority will remain with the administrative ministry.
According to the news agency PTI, Mr Pradhan stated, "We will bring the HECI bill to Parliament soon; however, even after that, there will be standing committee scrutiny." We've begun comprehensive work on everything. The measure will address three primary verticals.
