Meghalaya's Govt Establishes an Education Commission to Revamp the Education Sector
By appointing a four-member state education panel, the Meghalaya government has made an important step towards modernising the education system.
The panel, led by Sherwin May Sungoh, the dean of the education department at North Eastern Hill University, aims to recommend reforms and policy changes to enhance quality education across the state's schools, colleges, and further and technical education institutions.
Former UPSC Chairman David Reid Syiemlieh, former MBOSE Executive Chairman Tony TC Marak, and Education Secretary Ambrose Ch Marak, who will serve as the member secretary, will join Sherwin May Sungoh on the education commission.
The panel will also be supported by 12 co-opted members, ensuring that its proposals are thorough and diverse. The commission's mandate will be two years, giving it plenty of opportunity to analyse the educational scene and recommend meaningful adjustments.
The Education Commission's major goal is to offer specific solutions, strategic interventions, and policy decisions that are consistent with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The committee hopes to effect revolutionary reforms in the school and higher education systems by focusing on the values and goals expressed in the NEP. Its suggestions will cover a wide range of educational topics, such as curriculum development, infrastructure, teacher training, and accountability mechanisms.
Ensuring pay parity for teachers across different aided categories with government teachers will also be a priority.
Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma expressed confidence in the commission's ability to address the critical issues affecting education in the state.
