Kerala To Incorporate the Posco Act and Scientific Waste Management Training into the School Curriculum
The Kerala government has stated that lectures on scientific waste management and the Posco Act would be included in the school curriculum beginning with the next academic year in order to raise awareness about the importance of cleanliness and child safety regulations.
This project, announced by State General Education Minister V Sivankutty, intends to instill knowledge of sustainable waste management and awareness of the Posco Act in order to develop a better educated future generation.
This decision was announced by the general education minister at a celebration commemorating the 77th anniversary of independence held at the SMV Government Higher Secondary School.
According to a statement published by the Kerala Solid Waste Management Project (KSWMP), the inclusion of waste management classes in the curriculum is crucial in tackling the state's waste management concerns.
Sivankutty lauded the Haritha Karma Sena (HKS) in his speech, adding that they are more than a rubbish clearance squad, but a paradigm of collective action and empowerment. He emphasised the importance of women's roles in this drive.
As part of the Malinya Muktham Nava Keralam campaign, the minister awarded certificates to trained 'Green Technicians,' HKS members, for their particular talents in addressing technical waste management concerns.
Kerala has also chosen to educate children about the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. During a bail hearing, Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas of the Kerala High Court emphasised the disturbing increase in sexual offences against children and stressed the importance of educating children about their rights.
The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has proposed including POCSO Act lessons into the curriculum. The Council intends to enlist the help of specialists in developing textbooks that emphasise the importance and sensitivity of the problem.
A rollout of these lessons is set for the academic year 2024-2025 for specific classes (Classes 1, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 9), with the remaining classes (Classes 2, 4, 7 and 10) set to follow in the academic year 2025-2026.
The court expressed its appreciation for measures taken by the state government, SCERT, and KELSA to address POCSO awareness among children.
