Indian Graduate Study Permits Drop by 35% in Canada
In late 2024, the Canadian government announced study permit caps for masters and doctoral students starting in the 2025/26 academic year. Despite Canada’s early 2024 policy changes not affecting graduate-level students this year, the government granted 19% fewer graduate study permits in the 2023/24 academic year than in the prior year. Indian permits declined even further—by 35%.
Due to a reduced number of Indians applying for a master’s degree in Canada, the approval rate for permits for those who did apply increased from 78% to 92%. Certain institutions, such as International Business University, Trinity Western University, and the University of Niagara Falls, increased their number of Indian graduate students in the past year.
Even with the alterations to Canada’s immigration policies, ambitious students from India still have chances to achieve academic success in Canada. Approval rates for study permits have significantly increased, rendering programs like the recently ended Student Direct Stream (SDS) expensive and ultimately unnecessary.
Although Canada’s recent policy changes are transforming the international education landscape, they have opened up new avenues for Indian students to thrive in their studies. Indian students can enhance their study abroad experience by choosing institutions wisely and obtaining assistance from knowledgeable financial partners. By utilizing these opportunities, Indian students can thrive in Canada, enhancing the nation’s varied academic and professional landscape while pursuing their aspirations for global education and career growth.
