India to Launch MS in Quantum Technology Under National Quantum Mission

To support the National Quantum Mission, a Master of Science (MS) program in Quantum Technology will be launched in April 2025, announced Ajai Chowdhry, Chairman of the Mission Governing Board.

During the Quantum Conclave at IISc, Chowdhry talked about the critical necessity of proper skill-based expertise for the actual realization of the goals of NQM. Both the AICTE and the DST have started an undergraduate quantum technology program under which UG and MS classes are scheduled to commence in July 2025.

To build on research further, four thematic Hubs-T-Hubs were instituted such as IISc BengaluruQuantum computation, IIT MadrasQuantum communication, IIT BombayQuantum sensing and IIT DelhiQuantum materials. These centers will lead to research, propose, and implement innovation in their field.

In recognising the steep costs of quantum research, the government has increased funding to Rs 30 crore. Out of the 40+ startup proposals received, 14 have been done, and eight have been identified for funding. Each one of these start-ups will be mentored by experts working at T-Hub to speed up development.

The conclave also included expert sessions on quantum computation, sensing, communication, and materials, indicating the developing focus of India on research and innovation in quantum research.
