IIT Bombay Receives a Donation of Rs 160 Billion from a Former Student for a Centre for Research on Green Energy

The prestigious institute announced that an alumnus had donated USD 18.6 million to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay for the creation of a Green Energy and Sustainability Research Hub.

The IIT Bombay chose not to reveal the alumni' identify, citing his desire for anonymity.

By making this contribution, the institute will clarify its position in the fight against the climate problem. The hub will be situated in a cutting-edge academic building on the IIT Bombay campus in the Powai district, and its concentration will include critically essential topics, according to a statement from the university.

According to the statement, the areas of attention include assessing climate risks and creating practical mitigation plans, preparing for climate change, and conducting thorough environmental monitoring.

The hub also works to promote the use of renewable energy sources and energy-saving technologies, as well as advance climate solutions. According to the announcement, it will help with research in a number of important fields, including battery technology, solar photovoltaics, biofuels, clean-air science, flood predictions, and carbon capture, among others.

According to the statement, the research institute will foster strategic partnerships with leading universities and businesses throughout the world and provide educational training specific to the industry.

The creation of this centre demonstrates our commitment to addressing climate concerns through cutting-edge research, encouraging interdisciplinary collaborations, and supporting entrepreneurial initiatives, according to Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of IIT Bombay.

The Green Energy and Sustainability Research Hub stands as a testament to the impact that collective efforts can achieve in paving a sustainable path for the future, he said.

“This is a rare occurrence in Indian academia that a philanthropist wishes to stay anonymous," Chaudhari added.
