IIT and NIT Experts to Assist AICTE in Increasing Student Intake
The move comes after the technical education regulator removed the ceiling on increasing intake for high-performing institutions last month, as long as they maintained the highest level of education.
According to a top official, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has engaged over 700 faculty members from Indian Institutes of Technology and National Institutes of Technology to investigate the quality of education at its affiliated technical colleges before allowing an increase in seats.
The move comes after the technical education regulator removed the ceiling on increasing intake for high-performing institutions last month, as long as they maintained the highest level of education. Previously, technical colleges could only have 240 seats in any one field of study.
According to member secretary Rajive Kumar, the council has begun the seat approval process for 2024-25. It has hired faculty from prestigious universities to inspect the colleges before granting permission, he added.
"The council has specified some quality parameters for all technical Institutions, including sufficient faculty, fully equipped laboratories and updated infrastructure," Kumar went on to say. "Whenever new or existing institutions apply for a seat increase, we will send experts to inspect their facilities." The experts will submit their recommendations, based on which the AICTE will decide whether or not to allow them to increase the seats."
