Honoring a Dignified Profession: World Teacher's Day
Every year on October 5, the world celebrates World Teachers' Day to recognise and celebrate the work of educators such as teachers, researchers, and professors. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), in collaboration with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the International Labour Organisation (ILO), and Education International (EI), observes International Teachers Day or World Teachers' Day.
"The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage," is the theme of International Teachers' Day 2023.
According to a statement on the UNESCO website, the theme for World Teachers' Day 2023 emphasises the importance of halting the decline in the number of teachers and then beginning to increase that number at the top of the global agenda.
The World Teachers' Day 2023 celebrations aim to advocate for a dignified and valued teaching profession, analyse challenges, and showcase inspiring practises to attract, retain, and motivate teachers and educators, according to the statement.
The events also aim to investigate how education systems, societies, communities, and families recognise, appreciate, and actively support teachers.
On October 5, World Teachers' Day commemorates the adoption of the 1966 ILO and UNESCO recommendation on the status of teachers. The recommendations establish benchmarks for teachers' rights and responsibilities, as well as standards for their initial and continuing education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.
