Govt. Looking to Mandate Marathi in Schools Across Maharashtra
The state School Education Ministry is about to declare that Marathi will be mandatory in all schools across Maharashtra from the next academic year, irrespective of the board affiliation.
During a meeting with media representatives at Mantralaya on Tuesday, School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse stated that the state government plans to announce the initiative in the months ahead. A senior official from the Ministry stated that this action came after Marathi was acknowledged as a classical language in October of last year.
Following taking charge of the Ministry on December 30, Bhuse has held a series of meetings with all stakeholders, including, teachers, and representatives of teaching and non-teaching associations, and is said to have asked for their opinion on the matter.
The official further stated, “The government is dedicated to establishing Marathi as a mandatory subject in every school, and consultations with experts will take place in the upcoming months to guarantee the effective creation and execution of the policy."
The Ministry plans to conduct multiple meetings in the upcoming months to discuss the specifics of the policy. After gathering expert feedback, the policy will be finalized and then executed statewide in the upcoming academic year.
However, the previous Education Director also supported the idea concerning students arriving from various states for just a few years. According to him, exceptions might be granted in these cases.
