Four-year Degree Courses Offered by Colleges Affiliated with MU
MU's academic council made this decision in accordance with NEP guidelines, with the goal of offering inventive and career-focused educational prospects. In order to decentralize the implementation process and foster a multidisciplinary approach to learning, MU has established clusters of colleges. The undergraduate program will provide various opportunities for entry and exit, allowing students to earn certifications, diplomas, and basic Bachelor's degrees.
From the academic year of 2024-25 onwards, the University of Mumbai (MU) has extended the provision for students enrolled in its 812 non-autonomous colleges to undertake four-year degree programs such as BA, BSc, and BCom. This was approved by MU's academic council on Wednesday.
A majority of the 62 autonomous colleges under the purview of MU had already been granted this privilege. Following the directives of the New Education Policy (NEP), the decision has been made to expand this initiative to non-autonomous colleges as well. In accordance with this, a detailed curriculum and credit structure have been formulated for the fields of humanities, commerce, and science.
In a press statement, MU clarified that it carefully considered the recommendations of the Ravindra Kulkarni Committee report, University Grants Commission guidelines, and relevant government directives while designing the four-year degree courses for BSc, BCom, and BA. The objective of this strategic approach is to provide students with progressive, diverse, adaptable, career-focused, and proficiency-enhancing academic prospects.
According to MU vice-chancellor, Ravindra Kulkarni, the University has established a group of colleges in order to distribute the implementation process. He stated that a 'lead college' would be in charge of the quality improvement of member colleges within each cluster. There are two types of clusters that have been established: one for engineering colleges and another for traditional courses. The purpose of this structure is to encourage colleges within each cluster to jointly design courses, fostering a multidisciplinary approach to learning and facilitating the sharing of resources.
