Assam Government to Combine Class 10 and 12 Boards to ASSEB
In a recent board meeting held on November 16, the Assam government announced that the Class 10 and Class 12 boards will be merged into one and will be called Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB). Currently, there is the Board of Secondary Education Assam (SEBA) for class 10th and the Assam Board of Higher Education (AHSEC) for class 12th, which will now be merged into ASSEB.
The merger proposal was previously announced in June 2023. The decision to merge the board and the council into a single whole was made for the development, regulation and monitoring of the standards and quality of school education, an official announcement states.
Meanwhile, the Assam Secondary Education (Government Schools) Service (Second Amendment) Rules, 2023 and the Assam Secondary Education (Provincial Schools) Service (Second Amendment) Rules, 2023, were passed.
"The amended rules seek to maintain the pupil-teacher ratio," Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a social media post on ‘X.’
The government's goal is to maximize the use of manpower to provide effective academic support to students and prevent any negative impact on academic activities in provincialized and government secondary schools.
In a recent announcement, Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that SEBA will no longer be administering Class 10 (HSLC) board exams starting from the next academic year. Instead, the Class 10 matric exams will be conducted as a class examination. The officials have decided to skip Class 10 board exams because they believe that these exams will no longer hold as much importance in line with the NEP.
