Andhra Pradesh To Overhaul Intermediate Education, Drops First-Year Exams

In a major step, the Andhra Pradesh government is aiming to revamp the intermediate education framework, which includes scrapping public examinations for the first year of intermediate studies. During a press conference, Intermediate Board Secretary Kritika Shukla announced several proposals focused on updating the curriculum and examination procedures.

The reform initiatives involve shifting to a framework in which first-year intermediate exams will be administered internally by the colleges, akin to the CBSE approach. The Intermediate Board will exclusively carry out public exams for the second year. Shukla mentioned that this choice is part of wider initiatives to conform to the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) and guarantee that students are more ready for competitive tests such as NEET and JEE.

Shukla emphasized that NCERT textbooks will be implemented for intermediate education beginning in the 2025–26 academic year, after their recent incorporation into Andhra Pradesh's school curriculum for grades up to the 10th standard. "This transition will bring AP students on par with their counterparts in 15 other states already using NCERT textbooks," she said.

Alongside modifications to the curriculum, the reforms will emphasize updating the syllabus and adding new subject combinations to address various student interests and career goals. The government intends to improve the marks allocation system to boost transparency and equity.

To promote inclusive decision-making, the Board has requested input from students, parents, and educators regarding these suggested reforms. Stakeholders who are interested are invited to provide their input by January 26, 2025, via the official website of the Intermediate Board, where comprehensive proposals can be found.
