Why Do Indian Students Take Up Engineering Degrees?

If Engineering was a religion, it would have been the fifth most populous religion in India. India is a country where engineering has become a culture. Engineering colleges are growing like a wild mushroom year on year. Engineering is not just a degree, but a way of thinking. Even though numbers of engineering colleges have been closed down in recent years the ongoing demand for good engineers has remained constant. The rising number of candidates who appear for engineering entrance exams like JEE Main and JEE Advance provide evidence that engineering still continues to be a well accepted and admired option for higher education among the Indian youth.

Engineering is one of the few professions where creativity meets originality and innovation, and this explains its popularity. According to the first survey commissioned across 10 countries by the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, Indians lead developing countries when it comes to positive perception about engineering in terms of the prestige it accords to the professionals as well as its ability to contribute to nation building.

Here are some of the reasons why engineering is so popular amongst the youth:

1. Change the World: Not many professions can make such a big claim. Our society is growing day by day including technology, infrastructure and products, and public services. This is pretty much possible because of the engineers present in the various fields. Skill engineers are always on demand to tackle the complex tasks that face governments and economies every day.

2. Plenty of Career Opportunities: There are various types of engineering so there are plenty of career opportunities for the interested candidate to look forward to. As engineering doesn’t focus on only one vertical there is a specialization that you can pursue depending on the nature of your interest.

2. Promising Career Prospect: Science and technological advancement are escalating day by day. So there is no denying the fact that engineering is an evergreen career option.

3. Competitive Salary: A well-experienced engineer can earn lakhs of rupees per month. Being a high-level dedicated field it definitely makes sense that an engineer’s salary reflects their commitments.

4. Prestige: Engineering profession is a brand. It carries a high reputation and popularity in society. As an engineer, you will get a lot of opportunities to prove your skills and creativity. When you are a part of a big project people will remember you forever because of your creative work and upcoming engineers will look up to you as their role model.

5. Creative Thinking: Being an engineer is not everyone’s cup of tea. You need to be intelligent as well as talented as the profession demands. Being logical is not enough you need to be creative too. In this fast-changing world where technology changes minute by minute an engineer should be fast and creative enough to go hand in hand with the ever-changing technology.

6. Work that you will be proud of: There will be job satisfaction as you will proud of the projects that you worked for. For eg: building a bridge, infrastructure, developing a software, product, designing a car and many more. You will take pride in yourself when you see the results of your hard work and creativity.

Engineering and technology subjects continue to be in demand because they develop key skills that employers look for. The facts that just add the cherry on top is that there was a time when women mostly pursued the courses that helped them for managing their domestic life. But with the growing modernization women also started choosing up career options like engineering. The curtain-raising point is that women started pursuing their career as mechanical engineering which had a stereotype stating that was meant only for men.
