Examination:
UPSC IRS examination has 3 rounds – Preliminary, Main, and Interview.
Preliminary Round – The preliminary examination is conducted every year in the month of August. The preliminary round has two papers – both objective and has a total of 400 marks. This examination is qualifying in nature and the marks acquired by the candidates are not considered in the main round.
Main Round – The mains round is generally conducted in the month of December every year. Candidates who qualify in the preliminary examination are eligible to appear for the mains examination. The mains examination has nine papers, all of which are subjective in nature.
Personality Test – The last round is the personality test. Candidates who qualify in the main round get a call from the interviewers. It carries 275 marks. The final score of the candidate is decided after taking the sum of the marks scored by the candidate in mains examination and personality test.
For a general category student, at most 6 attempts are allowed. The SC/ST candidates get unlimited attempts and OBC category students get 9 attempts.
The pay of an Income Tax Officer (Junior) is within the bandwidth of INR 75,500 to INR 80,000 per month. As your years of experience increases and you receive promotions, the pay also increases.
