Exam Highlights - 2020 - SSC - Jr Engineer
SSC – Popularly known as Staff Selection Commission is yet to conduct this year’s SSC JE (Junior Engineer) examination to recruit fit candidates in the positions of Junior Engineer Civil, Mechanical and Electrical sectors.
The Junior Engineer position is subjected under Group B (Non-Gazetted) and the monthly income ranges between INR 35400 and INR 112400 according to the pay matrix of the 7th Central Pay Commission.
1. Within 2 hours, candidates have to complete SSC JE paper 1. It has 200 questions. SSC JE Examination Facts
2. For every negative answer, 0.25 marks will be deducted from Paper 1 (it is applicable in Paper 1 only).
3. Only candidates clearing Paper 1 are allowed to sit for Paper 2 examination.
4. In 2 hours, candidates have to complete Paper 2 which has a total of 300 marks.
5. Engineering questions will be asked from a candidate’s specialization.
6. The Paper 1 examination is conducted online (Computer Based Test) and Paper 2 is a Pen and Paper-based examination.
7. The language set for the examination is either Hindi or English.

Details About Examination
Paper 1
- Paper 1 will have 3 sections – General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness and General Engineering
- Section 1 and Section 2 will have 50 questions each. It is to check a candidate’s expertise over general reasoning and awareness.
- Section 3 will have 100 questions. It checks a candidate’s expertise over the selected stream – Civil/Mechanical/Electrical.
- Candidates are required to attempt only the part for Paper 1 General Engineering according to the option selected in the application form submitted by the candidate.
- For example, if a candidate has selected Part-A which falls under General Engineering – Civil and Structural, the candidate has to answer Part-A. It will have 100 questions comprising of 100 marks.
- Similar is for candidates appearing for Part-B General Engineering – Electrical and Part-C General Engineering (Mechanical).
- A total of 300 questions to be answered in 2 hours.
- 2 hours and 40 minutes is given to the candidates that are categorized with benchmark disabilities. They are allowed to have scribes provided they produce a certificate at the time of examination to the concerned person stating the candidate has physical limitation for writing and requires a scribe to write the examination on its behalf. The certificate is to be made by a Chief Medical Officer/Civil Surgeon/Medical Superintendent of a Government Healthcare Center as per Annexure-I.
Paper 2
- It will have descriptive type questions.
- Candidates need to answer only the part they have applied to. Part-A General Engineering – Civil and Structural, Part-B General Engineering – Electrical and Part-C General Engineering Mechanical.
- A total of 300 questions to be answered in 2 hours.
2 hours and 40 minutes is given to the candidates that are categorized with benchmark disabilities. They are allowed to have scribes provided they produce a certificate at the time of examination to the concerned person stating the candidate has physical limitation for writing and requires a scribe to write the examination on its behalf. Syllabus
Engineering questions are asked maintaining a standard upto diploma level.
Paper-I
General Intelligence and Reasoning – The questions are set for General Intelligence with verbal and non-verbal type. Questions may come from analogies, similarities, differences, space visualization, problem-solving, analysis, judgment, decision making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification and arithmetical number series. Questions are set to check the candidates’ expertise on dealing with abstract ideas and symbols and their relationships, arithmetical computations and other analytical functions.
General Awareness – These questions are set to test the candidates’ knowledge of the environment in which they live. Questions include current events, and everyday matter, observation and experience in a candidate’s scientific aspect. Questions may come from events happened in India and the neighboring countries including facts related to history, culture, geography, economic aspects, general polity and scientific research.
Part-A (Civil Engineering): Building Materials, Estimating, Costing and Valuation, Surveying, Soil Mechanics, Hydraulics, Irrigation Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Environmental Engineering. Structural Engineering: Theory of Structures, Concrete Technology, RCC Design, Steel Design.
Part-B (Electrical Engineering): Basic concepts, Circuit law, Magnetic Circuit, AC Fundamentals, Measurement and Measuring instruments, Electrical Machines, Fractional Kilowatt Motors and single phase induction Motors, Synchronous Machines, Generation, Transmission and Distribution, Estimation and Costing, Utilization and Electrical Energy, Basic Electronics.
Part-C Mechanical Engineering): Theory of Machines and Machine Design, Engineering Mechanics and Strength of Materials, Properties of Pure Substances, 1st Law of Thermodynamics, 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, Air standard Cycles for IC Engines, IC Engine Performance, IC Engines Combustion, IC Engine Cooling & Lubrication, Rankine cycle of System, Boilers, Classification, Specification, Fitting & Accessories, Air Compressors & their cycles, Refrigeration cycles, Principle of Refrigeration Plant, Nozzles & Steam Turbines. Properties & Classification of Fluids, Fluid Statics, Measurement of Fluid Pressure, Fluid kinematics, Dynamics of Ideal fluids, Measurement of Flow rate, basic principles, Hydraulic Turbines, Centrifugal Pumps, Classification of steel.
