Eligibility for Admission to BE

You might have heard that doing a bachelor's degree in engineering is cliche at present. However, it is a fact that students who are naturally innovative crave to do engineering. If you have creative thinking skills mixed with a pinch of seriousness then engineering is the right career choice for you. It is not a big issue from which college you do engineering, though doing engineering from a tier-1 college is the recommended thing to do.

In our country, students take up science subjects in combinations like - Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology, or Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer, or Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Biotechnology to study engineering.

Different colleges in India have different entrance examinations and different entrance examinations have different eligibility criteria.

The JEE Mains examination gives students a chance to study in IIITs, NITs, CFIT. It has the following eligibility criteria:

--> The exam is conducted twice a year and a candidate is eligible to appear for the examination 3 times.

--> The students are eligible to get admission in B.Tech, B.Arch, B.E and Integrated M.Sc courses.

--> The minimum age limit for students 17 years and they must not age more than 24 years. There are 5 years age relaxation for candidates belonging to SC, ST and PwD categories.

--> The subjects for students appearing in B.Tech entrance examination are Physics, Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Any other Technical Vocational Subject, Mathematics, One Language Subject and any other subject.

--> Mathematics is a compulsory subject for students appearing for B.Arch and B.Planning. The other subjects are: Physics, One Language Subject, Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Any other Technical Vocational Subject and One Language Subject.

--> The general category candidates should score at least 75 percent marks in the 10+2 level. The candidates belonging to SC, ST and PwD categories should score at least 65 percent marks in the 10+2 level.

JEE Advanced

--> The top 224000 candidates in JEE Mains get a chance to sit for the JEE Advanced examination.

--> Among the top 224000 candidates, 107464 are general category student and 5656 are PwD general students.

--> The numbers of students in the OBC-NCL group are 57,456 and the numbers of students in OBC-NCL PwD are 3024.

--> The numbers of students in the SC and ST groups are 31920 and 15960 respectively.

--> The numbers of students that falls under SC-PwD and ST-PwD category are 1680 and 840 respectively.

--> The maximum number of attempts in consecutive years in JEE Advanced is 2.

--> NO previous admission in IITs, even if the candidate has discontinued the course. Candidates should have never accepted any IIT seat.

--> Candidates who paid fee of seat acceptance but didn’t take accept the seat later are eligible to appear in JEE Advanced.

--> The general category candidates should score at least 75 percent marks in the 10+2 level. The candidates belonging to SC, ST and PwD categories should score at least 65 percent marks in the 10+2 level.

--> In the 12th standard board examination, the candidates should be within the top 20 percentile of successful candidates.

That goes for JEE Mains & JEE Advanced. Now, let us look into the eligibility criteria of other pristine engineering entrance examination.

Eligibility criteria for Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT)

--> Candidates need to score at least 60 percent marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/Biology subjects combined.

--> Candidates who belong to SC or ST category or who are hailing from Jammu & Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura need to score at least 50 percent in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Biology subjects combined. Candidates hailing from the above mentioned states need to produce Nativity Certificate at the time of counseling or they will get no admission.

--> Candidates who studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology are eligible for B.Tech, Bio-Medical Engineering and Biotechnology programmes. They can also study Computer Science and Engineering (B.Tech), but they should select Mathematics as a primary subject in their curriculum and it is mandatory.

Eligibility criteria for Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT)

--> Candidates should have completed a full time education and scored at least 60 percent marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects combined.

--> Candidates who want to study B.Tech and M.Tech dual degree Biotechnology, should have scored at least 60 percent marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/Biology subjects combined.

Eligibility criteria for BITS Pilani

--> Candidates should have passed 10+2 from a central or state recognized board with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as main subjects (except B.Pharm).

--> They should have adequate proficiency over English Language.

--> They should have obtained at least 75 percent marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/Biology subjects combined.

--> They should have obtained at least 60 percent marks in each of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/Biology.

Eligibility for SRM University of Science and Technology

--> Should have attained the age of 16+ on 31st of July in the year in which the candidate has appeared for 10+2 examination.

--> Candidates need to score at least 60 percent marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/Biology subjects combined to study in Kattankulathur campus.

--> Candidates need to score at least 50 percent marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects combined to study in Ramapuram, Vadapalani, and NCR, Delhi campuses.

--> Students opting to study Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering and Genetic Engineering need to score at least 60 percent marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/Biology subjects combined to get a chance to study in the Kattankulathur campus. To study in NCR, Delhi campus, they need an aggregate of 50 percent marks in the same subjects.

These are the eligibility criteria of examination for some of the best institutes in the Engineering world.
