BCA: Course Details, Eligibility, and Career Opportunities

In this age of Computers and everything being digitalized, knowledge about machines is very important as it helps a person to have a distinct advantage over the others who do not have knowledge in Computer Applications. BCA is a 3 years long Undergraduate Level Bachelor’s Degree program course specially designed to prepare students for the IT field and also to build a basic foundation for higher education. It is said to be one of the most sought-after courses for students who wish to make a career in the IT field as the course enables students for roles pertaining to Computer Applications and IT industry and helps a student develop programming skills, networking skills and learn application packages, programming languages and modern techniques of Information Technology. The 3 years’ duration is divided into 6 semesters, each lasting a period of 6 months. During each semester, students have to face different sets of written exams as well as practical and lab sessions. In simple terms, the program has lots to do with Computer Science and programming. Students are given knowledge on topics like Programming languages, hardware, and software, computer networks, World Wide Web, Database Management, Logic, Multimedia, etc.

Eligibility

10+2 Science stream students with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects, who have passed board examination from a recognized board, are eligible to pursue this course. Minimum marks criteria may exist, in case of many Institutes, it may vary between 40-50% marks in PCM (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) subjects. Also, in case of some Institutes, students must also have appeared for state level entrance examination to be considered eligible to apply for the course. The prime subjects to be included in your 11th and 12th should be Computer science and mathematics.  You can get admission through entrance exams that are conducted by the various colleges and universities and you can also get admission through merit-based.

Career Opportunities

While BCA gives students good technical knowledge, the graduates have a good scope in jobs as a Web Developer, Web Designer, Network Administrator, and System Manager. Some of the top MNCs that hire BCA graduates are Wipro, Infosys, HCL Technologies, TCS, Capgemini, and Tech Mahindra which offers an average salary of INR 3.4 lac per annum. Choosing electives thoughtfully might not sound like a big deal in your first year; however, they make a huge difference in your career. For example, if you want to study further after BCA, you can choose pathway electives like Artificial Intelligence, or if you’re looking forward to adding more skills to your resume to find a good job, you can opt for pathway electives like JavaScript, Front-End Web Development, App Development, etc. For BCA graduates, job opportunities exist in Government as well as Private sector. After BCA which is an Undergraduate course, graduates may take up Government jobs that require a Graduation Degree (for example- Armed Forces, Nationalized Banks, PSUs,etc.).In the Private sector, Software MNCs are the prime recruiters. Web hosting, IT sector, Electronics Industry are some other sectors that recruit BCA. Graduates may also become self-employed, by becoming freelance or independent software developers, software security experts, consultants, etc. One may also go for advanced courses such as MCA.
