NMC Rolls Back Passing Cut-off Criteria

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has today withdrawn the guidelines that would have reduced MBBS passing marks to 40%. The NMC stated that lowering the cut-off for MBBS passing marks to 40% is "not possible," and that the decision was made after careful consideration of the subject.

Earlier in September, the commission reduced the passing mark for MBBS subjects with two papers to 40%. The commission revised the curriculum guidelines for Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) regarding passing marks in university-conducted examinations.

According to the revised CBME guidelines released on September 1st, "in subjects with two papers, the learner must secure a minimum of 40% of marks in aggregate (both papers together) to pass in said subject."

Despite the fact that the NMC guidelines revised the MBBS passing marks, many students thought the decision to lower the passing marks was a good one.
