NMC Mandates Basic Medical Ed-Tech Training for Faculty

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a notification detailing the essential criteria for medical faculty members seeking promotion to the roles of Associate Professor and Professor. Faculty members are required to finish the Basic Course in Medical Education Technology (BCMET) from NMC-designated institutions to qualify for the positions of Associate Professor and Professor.

According to the public notice released by the National Medical Commission, "Paragraph 6 of the Teachers Eligibility Qualification in Medical Institutions Regulations, 2022 outlines criteria for faculty hires and advancements in Broad Specialties (MD/MS) and Super Specialties (DM/MCh) in authorized/recognized medical colleges/institutions." It requires that faculty members complete the Basic Course in Medical Education Technology (BCMET) from institutions approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for advancement to the positions of Associate Professor and Professor.

"Regarding the hiring of faculty in Government Medical Colleges, where positions have been approved and appointments executed at the last minute, the Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) has decided that in these instances, an affidavit needs to be secured from the Principal Secretary, Medical Education, of the pertinent State/UT, confirming that the appointed faculty will fulfill the BCMET training during the upcoming academic year," the notice stated.

The training needs to be finished prior to the application period for Letter of Permission (LOP) for the academic year 2026-27, anticipated to occur around October 2025.
