NMC Allocates 100 Seats Per Million Population in New Guidelines
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has set a ceiling of 100 UG seats per million population in each state. According to NMC, limiting the number of seats to 100 per 10 lakh population aims to decrease regional differences in healthcare professional availability.
"With the goal of providing the right teaching environment to medical students and improving overall education quality, the provision of limiting UG seats in each state to 100 per million population has been included in the recently notified MSR guidelines 2023," NMC said in an official notice, adding that it will go a long way towards ensuring effective quality of education.
While announcing this, NMC reiterated that various courts had made observations on medical college crowding, citing examples such as the recent W.P. No. 17263 of 2020 in case of K.R. Vasudevaa vs. State of T.N. and others, dtd 30.07.2021, Madurai bench of Madras High court that had cautioned NMC against medical college crowding.
With this ratio, NMC stated, there is the possibility for an additional 40,000 MBBS seats in the country provided medical colleges are allocated fairly.
"Various state branches of the IMA, student associations, and the medical fraternity in general have applauded NMC's decision." NMC shall continue its endeavour to improve quality of medical training in the country,” NMC notice stated.
