IIT Mandi launches Masters and PhD Programs in Music and Musopathy
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi is launching Masters of Science and PhD programs in music and myopathy through its Centre for Indian Knowledge System and Mental Health Application. These programs are designed to be flexible, allowing both full-time and part-time candidates to pursue them in live, online, or hybrid formats, regardless of their geographical location.
Laxmidhar Behera, Director of IIT Mandi, emphasized the institute's commitment to developing science and technology relevant to the Indian knowledge system. He noted that the new programs represent a significant step in this direction, aiming to explore the science of Indian music and its therapeutic value for holistic well-being.
The music and musopathy programs are research-based, focusing on producing highly skilled professionals and researchers. These individuals will contribute to the understanding and development of music and its beneficial impacts on individuals and society, particularly in the wellness-centric field of musopathy.
The formation of these programmes involved collaboration with notable figures, including Padma Vibhushan awardee Sonal Mansingh, percussion maestro Trichy Sankaran, professor emeritus at York University in Canada, and esteemed scientist Gautam Desiraju, professor emeritus at IISc Bangalore. Chitravina N Ravikiran also contributed to the programme design in collaboration with the music education portal acharyanet.com.
