The growth of higher education has been pretty swift post-independence, since the endorsement of the very first Education Act in 1961. Also, Indonesian higher education has continuously experienced rapid expansionduring the period from the 1970s to the 1990s, experiencing strong economic growth, fuelled by an oil-price boom and solid non-oil and gas export performance. Today, there are many Indonesian universities, colleges, medical schools, engineering schools, and law schools, that are highly respected and well-known in the education and academic communities, offering prestigious Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph. Aiming to become a top destination in Southeast Asia, the Indonesian government has been focused on revamping its higher education sector in recent years to keep pace with global competition from its neighbours such as Malaysia and Thailand.The Indonesian government has set a target to increase GER (Gross Enrollment Ratio) to 75 percent by 2045.They have even made significant strides improving on it, availing various scholarshipsto college students to help bright, disadvantaged students study at university. In 2017, 339,348 students received Bidikmisi scholarships to complete their undergraduate studies.However, today, the country's biggest challenge regarding education is no longer improving access, but improving quality, and that's being mitigated through advanced education means of technology and adept faculty members in designated science, research and other important fields.The Indonesian government has launched various programmes and incentives to improve the quality and competitiveness of local universities. These collective efforts have been accelerating the country's development in becoming a knowledge-based economy and tackling the looming threat of youth unemployment. It has become a very good choice for international students, given the quality education for a reasonable price,with great food, wonderful sights and friendly environ.
